The Best Game for the Job

Best Game

So Many Options

I’m a gamer. I love games of all sorts, but we all have our favorite type of game. I would love to make an intense action adventure game or something of the like. There is a vision for Helping Hand Games though, of creating a sustainable, charitable company that does some serious good. So I need to make a game for the majority, not a game for me and a much smaller segment of people. I also need to keep the scale of the project in mind since currently, I am a one man army creating this company. I set out on an adventure trying to answer the question, “What is the best game for the job?” My answer resided in the Apple App Store.

I sifted through the top 200 games on the Top Grossing list of the Games category on the App Store. My goal was to look for popular game types that bring in the most money. The most popular type of game in the top grossing are casino games such as slots and poker. The second most popular is Match-3 type games like Candy Crush. The third is world or colony building and battling type games like Clash of Clans. After the main three types, there are a bunch of miscellaneous other types Solitaire, Kitchen Dash types, Pool, Golf,  etc.

So with all these options which one is the best game for the job? I’m wasn’t super comfortable with the idea of doing a casino game, I think slots are a little shady. I’ve seen poker tournaments for charity and that’s a possibility down the road, but I didn’t want that to be the flagship game. Match-3 games are a lot of fun. I’ve played them before, my wife loves them. The bright colors and cartoony animations would make the art side of the project a lot of fun. The size and complexity of the project seems doable. A kingdom build type game would be a huge undertaking, so much game logic, and so many art assets. I think the scale of the project is a little out of reach right now.

So What Is the Best Game For the Job?

I think Match-3 best suits the job at hand. It’s proven to be a fun and popular game type. The only problem is there are so many of them already out there almost exactly like Candy Crush or Bejeweled. So I’m going to do a Match-3 with a different core game mechanics. Instead of just swapping the position of two items to match colors, why not draw a line through as many of the same color that are touching. It can be in any direction too, horizontal, vertical or diagonal, just try and connect the most possible. So that’s going to be it then, a modified Match-3 game. It will be fun, cartoony, and colorful, but best of all it will give people a fun way to help people in need all around the world.

Let me know what you think, leave a comment below, and don’t forget to share the article. That’s the best way you can support the project before the game comes out.
