There are so many different ways you can make a difference in your day to day life. Whether it be helping those around you or people on the other side of the world. Here are 10 simple ways you can make a difference today.
Making a difference locally
1.Smile at someone
This is probably the most simple yet one of the more difficult to do, at least for me. I’m always thinking about something when I’m out or at work and my default thinking face is very stoic. It requires some intentionality and it requires being present and not lost in thought but a smile definitely brightens people’s days. I know it does for me when I’m not lost in thought.
2. Genuinely ask someone how they are doing
It’s a cultural thing to say hi and ask how things are going which is usually met with “good” or “ok”, but let’s be honest it’s not genuine interest in a person it’s simply a formality. Be intentional today and really take interest in someone and listen to them.
3. Be more present when with people
Smartphones are one of the easiest ways to stay connected with people far away. Unfortunately, they have a tendency to distract us from those right next to us. Be intentional about putting your phone down when around friends and loved ones and actually work on connecting with them, it can really make someone feel loved having others undivided attention.
4. Random Act of Kindness
Everyone likes surprises, especially when it’s something nice being done for them. Bring someone their favorite drink. Pay for the person behind you in the drive through. Mow someone’s lawn for them, or if you’re in Phoenix pull the weeds out of their rocks. There’s a million different little things you can do to be kind to someone throughout the day.
5. Pray for someone
Never underestimate the power of prayer. One of my favorite examples is Elijah. His motives were in the right place, bringing glory to God and he knew it. So he wasn’t afraid to pray huge prayers and with complete faith because he knew that what he was praying would bring God glory. He also knew God worked in his own time and so Elijah was consistent with asking for things continually when he didn’t get an answer instantly. Pray for someone today. Pray that God would be glorified in their life and that they would be reminded of His love and strength.
Helping people around the world
1. Donate your birthday
We are blessed with so much, but there is always something we want. This year for your birthday sacrifice a little something you want and have people donate on your behalf to help provide for people who truly need something to survive.
This great little site donates rice to impoverished people and all you have to do is answer questions to help them do so. They have thousands of questions on a number of topics and for everyone you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice. It actually adds up pretty quick and in a short time, you provided a whole bowl of rice to someone who is hungry.
Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees with its ad revenue. It’s a great way to passively give back. Every 45 searches a tree is planted. So far I’ve planted 3 just in the past few weeks.
GlobalOwls allows users to review the sites of social enterprises and non-profits and offer advice on how to better communicate their cause. They have been a great help to Helping Hand Games and I would highly recommend them.
Charity Miles is an app where you can earn up to $0.25 a mile if you are walking or running and $0.10 a mile when biking.
Here’s another way you can help people, Fruit Heroes. It’s our first game, but it is not out yet. When it does come out, in mid-December, it will be a brand new way for people to help others in need. The game will be free to download. It will generate support for people in need through ads and in app purchases. Why not use the time you would spend crushing candy or launching birds at pigs and play a game that is just as fun but that does some good for people in need. In the meantime, if you’d like to help us achieve our goal of providing one million hot meals to children in need you can go here and purchase a Helping Hand Games shirt.
